Olympia Metal Buildings For Rock & Brews

Rock&brews

“Rock & Roll, Cold Beer, Great Food… it doesn't get any better! Keep on Rockin!” Says Rock & Brews about their new restaurant and beer garden, housed in a brand new twenty-seven hundred square foot Olympia Steel Buildings pre-engineered metal building designed for El Segundo, California’s Rock & Brews and supplied by Universal Steel Buildings Corp. The color of the eye-catching new building is “brite red”, while partial walls allow for an outdoor patio and “beer garden” feel with the building decked out like the backstage of a big rock tour, with a “wow” factor unlike any prefab metal buildings seen before now.

Rock & Brews Beer Garden is an outdoor patio and beer garden decked out like the backstage of a big rock tour surrounded with Rock & Rolls’ favorite and rare concert posters and photos. Top menu items are riffs on many iconic Rock bands' favorite foods making Rock & Brews, El Segundo’s hottest new restaurant.

“MEET GENE, BE ON TV, GET FREE FOOD?!” promised Rock & Brews in a recent online invitation to “mingle with Gene Simmons and get the chance to be on ‘Good Day LA’.” Veteran Rock promoter, Dave Furano, one of the owners of El Segundo’s Rock & Brews was tour manager for many great Rock tours, including the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, the Grateful Dead, The Doors, and many more. At every concert, he strove to create the ultimate backstage experience for the band’s friends and family including their favorite food, beer and memorabilia. “The concept behind Rock & Brews was to create this same kind of experience, and the Olympia Steel Building we designed and supplied was able to help re-create that sense of fun and excitement the owners were looking for,” stated Lucas Hocker, Vice President of Universal Steel Buildings Corp.

“Rock & Brews is planning to expand to Maui, Hawaii,” states Hocker, “and Olympia Steel Buildings will be there to help assure their continued success with a pre-engineered steel building customized and designed to reflect laid-back Hawaii and the fun-concept of a “back-stage beer garden” that has been so successful for them. “All in all this was a fun project for us, and we got a kick out of the fact that Gene Simmons was there to promote the grand opening.”

Zoning Considerations Before Building Steel Buildings

1
When thinking about building, whether steel buildings or conventional construction, it is important to check the zoning requirements of the property where the building is to go up.  The most common zoning approach, Euclidean zoning, named after the town of Euclid, Ohio, where it was first implemented, regulates development through land use classifications.  Common land use classifications are single-family residential, multi-family residential, commercial, institutional, industrial and recreational. The planning goals of Euclidian zoning are to provide for orderly growth, to prevent overcrowding, to alleviate congestion, and to separate incompatible uses, such as making sure that a noisy factory cannot be built near a residential neighborhood. Euclidian Zoning also regulates the height, bulk and area of structures, which you may find in the form of setbacks, side yards, height limits, minimum lot sizes, and lot coverage limits. All of these zoning requirements may affect the success of your metal building construction project. Therefore, it is important to check with your local planning department to find out what local zoning codes apply before you build.

Generally, agricultural use buildings are exempt from requiring a permit if they are beyond the city limits on farms and ranches. However, agricultural buildings still must comply with building codes for that area. If the local zoning ordinances don’t allow for the particular steel building you want to put up, you can try to modify the proposed building to fit the current zoning regulations; or you can look for land not subject to the zoning requirements. Often you can find a suitable property not far from where you originally intended to build, such just beyond the city limits, where zoning laws are typically not as stringent or complex. If all else fails and zoning laws do not permit you to put up your steel building in the location you desire, depending on your locality, you can apply for a variance, a conditional use or non-conforming use permit for your planned steel building.

Mini Storage Steel Building Construction Notes

 AandS-Mini-Storage-Building

Universal Steel Buildings construction division recently completed construction of a one-hundred thirty-two-unit mini-storage rental facility in Hagerstown, MD. The storage rental facility is comprised of three 3,000 square foot steel buildings and one 3,600 square foot prefab steel building totaling out to one-hundred thirty-two rental compartments. Universal Steel Buildings construction division supplied and put up the four Olympia Steel Buildings mini-storage buildings for the large self-storage rental facility project. Sixty-six storage units are provided with three-by-seven foot roll-up doors and the additional sixty-six storage units are provided with eight-by-seven foot roll-up doors to accommodate varying customer needs. All four metal buildings are insulated with 2” roof insulation.

“The mini-storage facility owner, Jeff Smith, was great to work with,” stated Jonathan Mass, Construction Division Design Estimator. “He knew exactly what he wanted to expand his current warehouse business into the growing self-storage rental sector.”

The self-storage rental facility business has grown into a multi-billion dollar industry over the past number of years as folks find the need to downsize but do not want to discard items they may value. Current businesses are expanding and new companies are starting up every day to meet the growing demand. The housing market crisis has added to the demand for self-storage rental units as homeowners find they are unable to maintain their current homes, yet do not want to part with precious possessions. The self-storage industry, once found mainly in high-density apartment rental urban areas, can now be found in all areas, from residential suburbs to industrial parks, both urban and rural areas.

“Owners and facility managers require that their self-storage facilities meet and exceed industry standards for quality, reliability and accessibility – that’s why they choose Olympia Steel Buildings mini-storage rental unit buildings when they decide to go into the business,” explains Mass. “We have twelve panel and trim colors, and our precision fabrication allows the buildings to be erected quickly, minimizing labor costs. All our structural framing is hot-dip galvanized for maintenance-free operation and the buildings can be expanded as the business grows. An added bonus is that steel panels and steel framing provide excellent fire resistance – something that is very important to the customer, to have the peace of mind in knowing their possessions are kept safe.”

Universal Steel Buildingsrecently announced the supply and construction of two pre-engineered metal buildings to DDM Properties for Jo's Globe Distributing CO, a retail beer distributorship in Morgantown, West Virginia. The project includes the supply and construction of a fifteen hundred square foot building attached to a new five-thousand six-hundred twenty-five square foot building also supplied and constructed by Universal Steel Buildings Construction Division.

The attractive new building has “lightstone” exterior wall sheeting with “fern green” trim, gutters and downspouts. The innovative paint used by Universal Steel Buildings on their Olympia steel buildings comes with a forty-year warranty, making for a maintenance-free exterior that never needs painting. This high-technology paint coating is a “cool coating” designed to act as a thermal barrier to reflect the sun’s rays, keeping the insides of metal buildings up to twenty percent cooler and reducing HVAC costs year-round.

“The building is great,” stated Mike Marrara of DDM Properties. “The building has everything we need – office space, cool warehousing for the beer we distribute, easy-access truck bays for loading and unloading the product and a showroom where customers can choose from the many different types of beer and wine that we have on display.” Jo’s Globe Distributing Company is committed to providing outstanding customer service, selection and value. Olympia Steel Buildings Completes New PA Fastenal Store

warehouse steel building

Olympia Steel Buildings recently supplied a five-thousand square foot pre-engineered steel building to Fastenal for a new store located in Lower Burrell, near Greensburg, PA. The building is designed with a standing seam metal roof in Galvalume® steel and uses heavy-duty 24 gauge steel on all panels, including sidewalls. The metal buildings exterior uses a “cool” paint coating in light stone and the trim is polar white. All interior beams are painted white, and when completed the building will be insulated with the “simple saver” insulation system. Construction is slated for completion at the end of March 2012.

“The customer was great to work with,” asserted Victor Gutierrez III, Universal Steel Buildings sales manager. They had done lots of shopping around and even visited the factory in Ambridge before they decided on going with Olympia Steel Buildings.”

Fastenal is a supplier of a myriad of essential items, from fasteners, to cutting tools and plumbing, HVAC and automotive. The company has its own national distribution network to provide needed supplies for the local communities they serve. Each of their 2,500+ local stores is also a one-stop source for the supplies needed to prepare for and deal with natural disasters, from bottled water and first aid supplies to safety gear, flashlights and power tools. As part of the company’s “Green Corporate Responsibility” initiative, they are ensuring that any new building or refurbishment plans adhere to current environmental standards and energy conservation requirements. Where possible, they source materials from suppliers who operate in an environmentally friendly manner and who, to reduce delivery miles, are geographically local. A lot has changed within the company in their more than 40 years of operation. The original single store with the wooden door for a front desk has been replaced by more than 2,500 stores with locally tailored inventories and modern merchandising, including the new 5,000 s.f. pre-engineered steel building supplied and constructed by Universal Steel Buildings to serve the local community near Greensburg, Pennsylvania.

“They were impressed with the quality control they saw when they visited the metal building manufacturing plant and the fact that Olympia Steel Buildings is a member of LEED and committed to Green building principles. Because our steel buildings are Green and environmentally friendly and steel can be recycled, the fact that we use “cool” paints that reduce energy usage and the company’s carbon footprint, and that we are geographically local, all sealed the deal for them.”

Steel Building Supplied To Pennsylvania's Metalico

warehouse steel building photo

Universal Steel Buildings Corp. recently announced supply and construction of a twelve-thousand three-hundred square foot metal warehouse building for Pennsylvania company, Metalico, Inc. Universal Steel Buildings construction division was selected to supply the Olympia Steel Buildings pre-engineered metal building, provide all concrete work and construct the building. The eighty-two by one hundred fifty foot pre-engineered steel building with a twenty-foot eave height will be used for a warehouse for non-ferrous scrap metal sales. The order was placed on December 12, 2011 and the building was delivered on January 7 2012. The new building, an attractive pearl gray with rustic red trim and 1:12 pitch screw-down Galvalume roof will be attached to an existing building at the company’s Neville Island site. Construction is slated for completion by April 1, 2012
“They were very easy customers to work with,” stated Victor Gutierrez III, Universal Steel Buildings sales manager, speaking about Metalico, Inc. “Once they met with us, toured the metal building factory and saw the quality and precision engineering, they were sold on Olympia Steel Buildings.”
Metalico operates both ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal recycling facilities in New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio, serving U.S. and Canadian markets.  All forms of metal scrap are purchased from manufacturers, small scrap dealers, demolition contractors and peddlers. Metalico Pittsburgh is a full-service metals recycling company that plays a leading role in scrap metals recovery both in the U.S. and abroad. They emphasize that recycling of metals saves natural resources, energy, and consumption of scarce landfill space.  Metalico scrap locations are positioned to offer easy access to peddlers and local residents, and encourage recycling of metal scrap, such as siding, window frames and doors, which typically end up in landfills.  They are one of a handful of companies in the U.S. that own and operate the state-of-the-art Texas Shredder model 80/104 for the shredding of scrap metal. Easy access to the facility by barge from the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio Rivers allows Metalico to handle the largest demolition and recycling jobs. The POHC Railroad also services their Neville Island facilities.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recognized the company's use of renewable wind energy and named Metalico as a Green Power Partner. Metalico continues to contribute to efforts to use renewable energy, reduce pollution and encourage recycling.

“Because Metalico prides itself on being a Green company, the decision to go with Olympia was easy,” Gutierrez observes. “Pre-engineered steel buildings are inherently Green, and since the steel building factory itself is located just a few miles away from the construction site, it meets Green building requirements of sourcing materials locally as well.”

“It was great to meet and talk with leading aircraft hangar and maintenance facility construction and support technologies experts,” stated John McAdoo, of Universal Steel Buildings. “The information we gained from attending this forum makes us very competitive in the design, supply and delivery of aircraft hangars for both military and civilian agencies.”

Universal Steel Buildings sales personnel recently completed the 8-hour course of instruction offered by the National Aerospace Organization in Military Aircraft Hanger Construction and Modernization Technologies. New MILCON technologies and materials for use at military airbase installations were presented and discussed.  This included aircraft hangar MILCON construction & modernization projects with the U.S. Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and Army Aviation.  Colonel John D. Thomas, U.S. Air Force (Retired), President of the National Aerospace Organization presented forum participants with certificates of completion.

The focus of the forum was high-quality, economical, durable metal building solutions that are environmentally friendly and highly efficient.  Forum courses included instruction in pre-engineered structural processes to create faster construction times, reduce material requirements and lower construction costs. An overview of pre-engineered steel buildings for aircraft hangers, service buildings, warehousing and office space was given, along with best practices for achieving outstanding results in hangar design and construction. Also included in the forum were discussions of management and tracking of high value tools, fire detection and protection sensor systems for aircraft hangers and maintenance facilities, and environmentally compliant testing of fire suppression systems. Presentations included discussion of frame supported tension membrane hangars, including rapid erect hangars, rapid deployment shelters and rapid environmental shelters.

Save Thousands On Steel Buildings

Farmers can now take 100% bonus depreciation on new assets that qualify, including most new agricultural steel buildings, but only until December 31, 2011*

“Olympia has received several orders in the last several weeks from farmers taking advantage of the expansion of the Section 179 tax deduction to $500,000 and the introduction of 100 percent bonus depreciation for new assets bought after September 8, 2010, and before January 1, 2012,” stated Lucas Hocker, vice president of Olympia Steel Buildings.

According to Section 179 of the Federal Income Tax code, any new farm building purchased and placed into service during 2011 can qualify for the 100% bonus depreciation for federal income tax purposes. This includes a machine shed, a hay shed, a storage shed, barn, or a house owned by a C corporation.
While any new building on a farm can qualify for the 100% bonus depreciation, only single purpose agricultural structures such as a hog confinement facility or a greenhouse, a dairy barn, or horse barn with stalls can qualify for the Section 179 deduction.

Important! Only new farm buildings placed in service between September 9, 2010 and December 31, 2011 qualify for the 100% bonus depreciation. And any amount not deducted under Section 179 will be depreciated over seven years instead.

You need to act now! Call Olympia Steel Buildings 888-449-7756 right away, or visit our website to get an agricultural steel building price or farm metal building quote before time runs out on Section 179 Federal Income Tax deductions.

*Please consider meeting with a tax professional to evaluate tax implications for both past and future farm asset purchases.

Steel Buildings Can Qualify For LEED Green Building Certification

Sustainable Pre-engineered Steel Buildings Can Qualify For LEED Certification

“Because steel buildings are naturally Green and because we want to do our part to be environmentally responsible, Universal Steel Buildings Corp., sole supplier of Olympia Steel Buildings has joined the U.S. Green Building Council to demonstrate our support of sustainable building practices and commitment to Green Building principles and design,” stated Arnold Davis, President of Universal Steel Buildings Corp.
Pre-engineered steel buildings and metal buildings systems are an innovative building solution featuring solid steel I-beam building construction and they are leading the way in the Green building movement, meeting Green building design goals with innovative building design, engineering and use of materials.

“Steel buildings are durable, cost effective, energy efficient, and Green,” asserts Davis.

There are many attributes that qualify pre-engineered steel buildings as sustainable, energy-efficient and Green. Pre-engineered steel buildings employ sustainable building design and construction. Steel building components are manufactured to precise specifications in a metal building factory using the highest grade commercial American made steel available. Modern American steel manufacturers employ energy efficient methods in steel production that help substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The steel used in metal buildings manufacture has a high proportion of recycled content. Steel building construction does not require cutting down valuable old growth forests. When a steel building is razed to make way for new building construction, the steel can be recycled, not dumped into landfills as are asphalt shingles, concrete, brick and wood. Steel can be recycled over and over again without loss of the quality of the steel. More steel is recycled than all other recyclable materials combined. “Cool” paints for steel buildings and metal roofing reflect up to 70 percent of the suns rays acting as a thermal barrier to keep the inside of metal buildings cooler. Metal roofs can also save energy and the environment in cooler climates. A painted metal roof not only reflects heat in summer, but also retains heat inside the building on cool days, saving on heating costs and keeping the indoor environment healthy and comfortable in both summer and winter.

“What this means to you, the customer, is that when you purchase an Olympia Steel Building, you will have the opportunity to save money and build Green with the latest in Green building technologies,” affirms Davis.  “You may qualify for energy credit under the Federal tax codes, and you will be able to apply for LEED certification for your building project.”

Steel Buildings Standing Seam Metal Roofs

steel building metal roof photo
The new “Architectural” standing seam metal roof system showcased by Olympia Steel Buildings is designed for use on new construction and as a replacement roof for existing buildings where architectural appearance as well as weather resistance are important considerations. This standing seam metal roof is suitable for steel buildings, metal buildings, and buildings of conventional construction as well.

“Many standing seam roof systems have a similar appearance to the new Architectural Roof System, but they have major differences in their performance,” states Arnold Davis, President of Universal Steel Buildings Corp, sole distributor of Olympia Steel Buildings. “We are very excited about the new Architectural Roof System available as an option on Olympia steel buildings. It makes a beautiful roof profile on pitched roofs where the roof can be seen from the ground, making it very appealing to architects who want to enhance the look and appearance of the building. This unique roof system has many advantages over most other metal roof systems, and when properly installed the Architectural Roof System offers excellent weather resistance and is practically maintenance free.”

The Architectural Roof System available on Olympia Steel Buildings consists of metal panels joined together by a unique factory-formed interlocking seam that is easily assembled and seamed in the field. “The Architectural Roof System Panels have a sidelap that can be formed into two types of seams,” explains Davis. “The patented TripleLok™ seam, which will resist greater uplift forces than any known seam, and the QuadLok™  seam, formed by reforming the TripleLok™ seam to further tighten and form an additional strengthening bend. This allows a 24-gauge metal roof panel to resist uplift loads greater than even a 22-gauge panel. Because the TripleLok™ seam is such a superior seaming system, the additional strength of the QuadLok™ seam is required only at some roof edge zones and corners or on extremely high roofs in high wind areas where wind uplift forces are severe.”

The Architectural Roof System steel panels are fabricated of Galvalume® coated steel and optional factory applied paint with an available color option to further enhance the beauty of this exceptional metal roof system. The Galvalume coated steel panels provide a long-lasting roof membrane with a proven weatherability in excess of 20 years. The Architectural steel panels are impervious to moisture and resist falling objects and roof traffic better than other roof membranes commonly used. The Architectural steel panels also resist live load and wind uplift without the complexity and cost required on other metal roofing systems.

Steel Buildings Stand Up To Earthquakes

How Do Steel Buildings Stand Up To Earthquakes

With an earthquake last week in Colorado and one just today in Virginia – places where we don’t normally expect or experience that scary shaking of the earth – the question on everyone’s mind has got to be “How safe is my building from earthquakes?”

If you have a pre-engineered steel building purchased from a reputable steel building company that engineers all their prefabricated metal buildings according to local building codes, including seismic (that’s earthquakes) then your building will remain standing when other structures buckle, crumble and bend and ultimately collapse.

Today we felt the Virginia earthquake all the way in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. When talking with my husband on the phone today at lunch he struck fear into my heart when he said, “Holy cow, the house is shaking! And I can hear a low rumbling – we must be having an earthquake!” Now our house is a hundred-year-old three-storey stick-built brick building with rafters and beams the size of large trees so we don’t expect it to shake from an earthquake 300 miles away in Virginia, but it did. If instead the building had been a pre-engineered steel building, I would have had no worries at all; in fact, I probably wouldn’t have felt a thing. Case closed. Period.

So if you are lucky enough to be able to build with new construction, you can’t do better, or find any safer building construction than pre-engineered steel buildings. Just make sure the company you work with has engineers that are knowledgeable to make sure your local building codes are satisfied, including seismic, so your building can stand up to earthquakes if need be.

Steel Buildings Get Canada Quality Certification

Olympia Steel Buildings Are Canada CSSBI Quality Certified

Mc Kees Rocks, PA (Vocus) August 3, 2010 -- Steel Built Corp, the manufacturer of Olympia Steel Buildings ®, has been certified as meeting all requirements of Canada’s CSA-A660 Quality Certification for Steel Building Systems.

“Steel Built Corp is proud to meet all requirements of Canada’s CSA-A660 Quality Certification for Steel Building Systems,” announced Arnold Davis, President of Universal Steel Buildings Corp, sole supplier of Olympia Steel Buildings. “Not all pre-engineered metal buildings companies are able to meet the high standards of quality set by CSA-A660 and the CSSBI. CSA-A660 Certification assures Canadian customers that Olympia Steel Buildings meet or exceed the quality requirements for certification established for pre-engineered metal building systems and are manufactured to adhere to the standards of the CSSBI, the Canadian Sheet Steel Building Institute.“

With CSA-A660 compliance comes the assurance that the manufacturer has been audited for personnel training and adherence to procedures, design and engineering compliance, raw material controls and traceability, and fabrication, warehousing, packaging, shipping compliance to the plant quality program. “ISO Accreditation is not the same as CSA-A660 Certification,” notes Davis. “CSA-A660 certification includes a quality control audit like ISO, but in addition undertakes an engineering design and personnel audit.”
“It is mandatory that U.S. manufacturers selling steel buildings or metal buildings systems into Canada have this certification,” says Davis. “Our factory, Steel Built Corp, has invested time and money to ensure that our pre-engineered metal building systems meet Canadian standards. All pre-engineered steel buildings and metal building systems bought out of the U.S. should have “factory of origin” documentation written on purchase contracts along with a copy of the CSA-A660 certificate from that factory. Otherwise,” warns Davis, “the buyer may experience problems getting permits for buildings from factories that are not CSA-A660 certified for Canada. Be sure to ask for proof of CSA-A660 certification before you buy.

About CSA-A660 Certification
The CSA-A660 Standard was developed to assist code enforcement officials in reviewing building permit submissions incorporating steel buildings and metal building systems and to help purchasers receive a quality certified building. As part of the CSA-A660 compliance, the manufacturer provides a "Certificate of Design and Manufacturing Conformance" signed and sealed by a licensed Professional Engineer for each building project.
