Olympia Steel Buildings Canada CSA-A660 Quality Certification for Steel Building Systems
The manufacturer of Olympia Steel Buildings ®, Steel Built Corp., has been certified as meeting all requirements of Canada’s CSA-A660 Quality Certification for Steel Building Systems.
“Steel Built Corp is proud to meet all requirements of Canada’s CSA-A660 Quality Certification for Steel Building Systems,” announced Arnold Davis, President of Universal Steel Buildings Corp, sole supplier of Olympia Steel Buildings®. “Not all pre-engineered metal building companies are able to meet the high standards of quality set by CSA-A660 and the CSSBI. CSA-A660 Certification assures Canadian customers that Olympia Steel Buildings meet or exceed the quality requirements for certification established for pre-engineered metal building systems and are manufactured to adhere to the standards of the CSSBI, the Canadian Sheet Steel Building Institute.“
With CSA-A660 compliance comes the assurance that the manufacturer has been audited for personnel training and adherence to procedures, design and engineering compliance, raw material controls and traceability, and fabrication, warehousing, packaging, shipping compliance to the plant quality program. “ISO Accreditation is not the same as CSA-A660 Certification,” notes Davis. “CSA-A660 certification includes a quality control audit like ISO, but in addition undertakes an engineering design and personnel audit.”
“It is mandatory that U.S. manufacturers selling steel buildings into Canada have this certification,” says Davis. “Our factory, Steel Built Corp, has invested time and money to ensure that our pre-engineered metal building systems meet Canadian standards. All pre-engineered steel buildings and metal building systems bought out of the U.S. should have “factory of origin” documentation written on purchase contracts along with a copy of the CSA-A660 certificate from that factory. Otherwise,” warns Davis, “the buyer may experience problems getting permits for buildings from factories that are not CSA-A660 certified for Canada. Be sure to ask for proof of CSA-A660 certification before you buy.
The CSA-A660 Standard was developed to assist code enforcement officials in reviewing building permit submissions incorporating steel buildings and metal building systems and to help purchasers receive a quality certified building. As part of the CSA-A660 compliance, the manufacturer provides a "Certificate of Design and Manufacturing Conformance" signed and sealed by a licensed Professional Engineer for each building project.

Steel Buildings Project For Texas Oil Field Facility
Ark-La-Tex Services has provided oil field services to the oil industry in the quad-state area since 1997, providing septic systems, water tanks, dumpsters, trash trailers, portable toilets, holding tanks and potable water. After fourteen years in the business, owner, Rodney Wooten and his wife Margaret decided it was time for the company to grow. They had ambitious plans for positioning the company as a leading player in the region. Integral to their plans was the construction of modern new facilities that would not only be a perfect fit for the current company size, and construction that could easily expand to accommodate the projected future growth and recognized that pre-engineered steel buildings could provide the flexibility their plans demanded. After researching other metal buildings companies, including those local to their area, Ark-La-Tex Services contracted with Olympia Steel Buildings for supply and construction of new facilities.
The new construction consists of two metal buildings, one 32,000 sf pre-engineered steel building to be used as a warehouse, and the other a 9,000 sf pre-engineered steel building to house office facilities for Ark-La-Tex Services. Olympia Steel Buildings supplied and erected the pre-engineered steel buildings, installed the windows, doors and insulation.
“I’m really glad that Rodney [Mr. Wooten] chose us over a local Texas company,” stated Erika Stanford, the Olympia Steel Buildings building estimator who worked with the Wooten’s every step of the way to get them the facilities they needed. “I know that once he gets these buildings, he will really love the quality. I know that anyone who sees the buildings is going to want an Olympia Steel Buildings pre-engineered metal building. I know that. Rodney and his wife Margaret are really good people and it was very enjoyable working with them. I am happy that they went with Olympia.”

Olympia Metal Buildings For Rock & Brews
“Rock & Roll, Cold Beer, Great Food… it doesn't get any better! Keep on Rockin!” Says Rock & Brews about their new restaurant and beer garden, housed in a brand new twenty-seven hundred square foot Olympia Steel Buildings pre-engineered metal building designed for El Segundo, California’s Rock & Brews and supplied by Universal Steel Buildings Corp. The color of the eye-catching new building is “brite red”, while partial walls allow for an outdoor patio and “beer garden” feel with the building decked out like the backstage of a big rock tour, with a “wow” factor unlike any prefab metal buildings seen before now.
Rock & Brews Beer Garden is an outdoor patio and beer garden decked out like the backstage of a big rock tour surrounded with Rock & Rolls’ favorite and rare concert posters and photos. Top menu items are riffs on many iconic Rock bands' favorite foods making Rock & Brews, El Segundo’s hottest new restaurant.
“MEET GENE, BE ON TV, GET FREE FOOD?!” promised Rock & Brews in a recent online invitation to “mingle with Gene Simmons and get the chance to be on ‘Good Day LA’.” Veteran Rock promoter, Dave Furano, one of the owners of El Segundo’s Rock & Brews was tour manager for many great Rock tours, including the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, the Grateful Dead, The Doors, and many more. At every concert, he strove to create the ultimate backstage experience for the band’s friends and family including their favorite food, beer and memorabilia. “The concept behind Rock & Brews was to create this same kind of experience, and the Olympia Steel Building we designed and supplied was able to help re-create that sense of fun and excitement the owners were looking for,” stated Lucas Hocker, Vice President of Universal Steel Buildings Corp.
“Rock & Brews is planning to expand to Maui, Hawaii,” states Hocker, “and Olympia Steel Buildings will be there to help assure their continued success with a pre-engineered steel building customized and designed to reflect laid-back Hawaii and the fun-concept of a “back-stage beer garden” that has been so successful for them. “All in all this was a fun project for us, and we got a kick out of the fact that Gene Simmons was there to promote the grand opening.”

Zoning Considerations Before Building Steel Buildings
When thinking about building, whether steel buildings or conventional construction, it is important to check the zoning requirements of the property where the building is to go up. The most common zoning approach, Euclidean zoning, named after the town of Euclid, Ohio, where it was first implemented, regulates development through land use classifications. Common land use classifications are single-family residential, multi-family residential, commercial, institutional, industrial and recreational. The planning goals of Euclidian zoning are to provide for orderly growth, to prevent overcrowding, to alleviate congestion, and to separate incompatible uses, such as making sure that a noisy factory cannot be built near a residential neighborhood. Euclidian Zoning also regulates the height, bulk and area of structures, which you may find in the form of setbacks, side yards, height limits, minimum lot sizes, and lot coverage limits. All of these zoning requirements may affect the success of your metal building construction project. Therefore, it is important to check with your local planning department to find out what local zoning codes apply before you build.
Generally, agricultural use buildings are exempt from requiring a permit if they are beyond the city limits on farms and ranches. However, agricultural buildings still must comply with building codes for that area. If the local zoning ordinances don’t allow for the particular steel building you want to put up, you can try to modify the proposed building to fit the current zoning regulations; or you can look for land not subject to the zoning requirements. Often you can find a suitable property not far from where you originally intended to build, such just beyond the city limits, where zoning laws are typically not as stringent or complex. If all else fails and zoning laws do not permit you to put up your steel building in the location you desire, depending on your locality, you can apply for a variance, a conditional use or non-conforming use permit for your planned steel building.

Mini Storage Steel Building Construction Notes
Universal Steel Buildings construction division recently completed construction of a one-hundred thirty-two-unit mini-storage rental facility in Hagerstown, MD. The storage rental facility is comprised of three 3,000 square foot steel buildings and one 3,600 square foot prefab steel building totaling out to one-hundred thirty-two rental compartments. Universal Steel Buildings construction division supplied and put up the four Olympia Steel Buildings mini-storage buildings for the large self-storage rental facility project. Sixty-six storage units are provided with three-by-seven foot roll-up doors and the additional sixty-six storage units are provided with eight-by-seven foot roll-up doors to accommodate varying customer needs. All four metal buildings are insulated with 2” roof insulation.
“The mini-storage facility owner, Jeff Smith, was great to work with,” stated Jonathan Mass, Construction Division Design Estimator. “He knew exactly what he wanted to expand his current warehouse business into the growing self-storage rental sector.”
The self-storage rental facility business has grown into a multi-billion dollar industry over the past number of years as folks find the need to downsize but do not want to discard items they may value. Current businesses are expanding and new companies are starting up every day to meet the growing demand. The housing market crisis has added to the demand for self-storage rental units as homeowners find they are unable to maintain their current homes, yet do not want to part with precious possessions. The self-storage industry, once found mainly in high-density apartment rental urban areas, can now be found in all areas, from residential suburbs to industrial parks, both urban and rural areas.
“Owners and facility managers require that their self-storage facilities meet and exceed industry standards for quality, reliability and accessibility – that’s why they choose Olympia Steel Buildings mini-storage rental unit buildings when they decide to go into the business,” explains Mass. “We have twelve panel and trim colors, and our precision fabrication allows the buildings to be erected quickly, minimizing labor costs. All our structural framing is hot-dip galvanized for maintenance-free operation and the buildings can be expanded as the business grows. An added bonus is that steel panels and steel framing provide excellent fire resistance – something that is very important to the customer, to have the peace of mind in knowing their possessions are kept safe.”

The five-thousand square foot pre-engineered metal building has three fourteen-by-fourteen sectional overhead doors to allow for easy movement of trucks into and out of the building. In addition, there are two three-by-seven walk doors. The company has its own national distribution network to provide needed supplies for the local communities they serve. Each of their 2,500+ local stores is also a one-stop source for the supplies needed to prepare for and deal with natural disasters, from bottled water and first aid supplies to safety gear, flashlights and power tools. As part of the company’s “Green Corporate Responsibility” initiative, they are ensuring that any new building or refurbishment plans adhere to current environmental standards and energy conservation requirements. Where possible, they source materials from suppliers who operate in an environmentally friendly manner and who, to reduce delivery miles, are geographically local. A lot has changed within the company in their more than 40 years of operation. The original single store with the wooden door for a front desk has been replaced by more than 2,500 stores with locally tailored inventories and modern merchandising, including the new 5,000 s.f. pre-engineered steel building supplied and constructed by Universal Steel Buildings to serve the local community near Greensburg, Pennsylvania.
